You know that smoking is bad for your health when you start smoking and you know it is hard to quit so why do people even start smoking in the first place? This article captured my interest because I work with a lot of people that smoke and have been smoking or years and I always wondered what their motivation was to smoke. With the many students they had participate in this study it was easy to them to survey them through an automated system through a survey. They were sent the link to a webpweapon had their participants review their daily cigarette intake and report how many they had every day for two weeks. The students could select how many igarcigarettesy had then they had open ended questions where they could elaborate on it. They reported daily how often they smoked and then they were asked questions about why they smoked or why they chose not to smoke. b. They also used a special software called PsycPsychiatry> With this specific measure they were able to help code the motives that people had to smoke and how many cigarettes were associated with the motive daily. It was able to track all day-to-day changes in the participants motivation to have a cigarette. It also helped that participants to be able to tell why they chose to not have a cigarette and it displayed that data alongside the data of the smokers of that day. . Marshal McLuhan – Charlatan or Visionary? Marshal McLuhan has been described as both a â€Å"media prophet† and a â€Å"pop professor† (Wilcox). Although his book The Medium is the Massage was rejected by some academics (Wilcox), it became a popular success outside the academic world. His ability to coin such phrases as the â€Å"global village† and his ideas on how media influences culture allowed McLuhan to become an icon of the counterculture movement of the 1960’s. Some scholars argue that McLuhan’s voice was even â€Å"swallowed up in the popular cultural movement† (Surette). The word macluhanisme has been adopted into the French language as â€Å"a synonym for the world of pop culture† (Playboy). But was McLuhan truly a pioneering scholar? The cold gray steel of the axe arced one last time through the air, the pick burrowed itself one last time into the frozen blanket of snow, and the hand that held it took a final pull, to ensure a secure placement. After a brief pause, George Mallory took a deep breath, and pulled himself over the crux, and onto the top. Slowly, shakily, he stood up, and took a look around, the first time American eyes had seen the world from this vantage point. This was it. He had done it. He was the first American to ever climb Everest. The sky was a most crystalline blue, and clear too, except for the small puffy white clouds in the distant East. George had the most incredible view ever seen in all directions; he could see for hundreds, probably even a thousand miles. If only others could see this! he said to himself. If only he had brought a camera, not only would he be able to show the human race the true beauty still found in nature, he could prove that he had actually accomplished the feat. Hopefully his friends down below could see him on the top. Mallory briefly thought of waving, but the notion quickly passed when he realized the absoluteness of his fatigue. He was exhausted, plain and simple. Even after deciding against bringing a stove or any other nighttime equipment, his pack still weighed in at about 40 lbs, because of the extra oxygen bottles he picked up from a discarded pile.
